Windborne at Blackstone River Theatre
If you want to experience traditional folk music in a truly folksy kind of place, we’ve got just the thing – Windborne plays the Blackstone River Theatre in Cumberland, RI on January 18.
Windborne is a versatile quartet of talented singers, who shift between genres like no band you may have ever heard. They’re educational as well as entertaining – telling stories about the music and the traditions behind them as they dart from Corsican couplet songs to English ballads. WGBH’s Brian O’Donovan called them “The best musical discovery of the year,” and raves, “Windborne sets a new bar for folk harmony singing today.”
Speaking of discoveries, you won’t want to miss the Blackstone River Theatre. It’s not at all fancy; it’s a renovated Masonic Hall that has the intimate feel and familiarity of a middle school auditorium, but it’s got great acoustics and a captivating authenticity that’s worth experiencing. BRT is completely run by a dedicated staff of volunteers, and is one of the best places in Rhode Island for a night of great traditional music.
Performance begins at 8 p.m. Tickets for the concert are $16 if you reserve in advance (call 401 725 9272 to make your reservation) or $20 at the door (it’s not recommended you wait, as shows do have a tendency to sell out.) The BRT has regular shows throughout the winter, most of them on Saturday nights at 8 – artists are accomplished; prices never exceed the low $20-dollar range. Check the website for details.
